Due to the April 15 flood event and its aftermath, Hanalei Canoe Club has cancelled what would have been its 38th annual Ha’ena to Hanalei run that was to be held on Saturday June 2, 2018.
The popular run, considered by many to be one the world’s most scenic, is popular with both locals and visitors alike. Approximately 30% of the runners travel to Kauai from the mainland, other islands and even internationally.
“It is with great sadness that Hanalei Canoe Club is announcing the cancellation of our annual Ha`ena to Hanalei Run that was scheduled for June 2.” Says Mary Mair, Secretary of the Hanalei Canoe Club.
In addition to the fact that the road (Kuhio Highway) where the run is held more than likely won’t be open in time for the run, Mair adds “Our run is such a great community event but so many on our island and our paddling community have been deeply affected by the flood. Although we could see the benefits of holding the event in an alternate location we were also aware of the impact on an already stressed situation. Finding another location to hold the run this year, combined with navigating the logistics proved to be insurmountable for us.”
Hanalei Canoe Club stressed that they will hold the run, which is one of the biggest fundraisers for the year for the Hanalei Canoe Club, in 2019. Says Mair, “With the addition of the 1/2 marathon course, our run will be better than ever next year.”
Runners who have pre-paid their registration and would like to have their entrance fee refunded may contact us on our website, hanaleicanoeclub.org. If you’d like to have your 2018 registration and fee applied to next year’s run, please contact Mary Mair at firstname.lastname@example.org
Hanalei Canoe Club was also dramatically impacted by the flood, losing 9 of its 12, 6 man racing canoes, close to 30 personal 1-man canoes, rigging, equipment and more. Currently club paddlers are not able to access the club due to the road closure on Weke Road. Local and other island clubs have lent or donated canoes so that Hanalei paddlers can resume training and paddling for the 2018 season.
Hanalei Canoe Club has set up a donation button for those wishing to help support the rebuilding of Hanalei Canoe Club.
