Hanalei Canoe Club is the oldest canoe club on Kauaʻi and was established to support the youth of Kauaʻi's north shore communities. As we celebrate our 52nd anniversary, our youth program remains at the heart of the club, uniting communities from keiki to kupuna.
Since 1973, the Hanalei Hawaiian Civic Club and Hanalei Canoe Club have continued to prioritize our nā ʻōpio (youth) paddling program. The opportunities this program provides our keiki are at the core of both clubs’ missions. This year’s youth program features over 50 paddlers, ranging in age from 5 to 18 years old. Many of our nā ʻōpio (youth) are third- and fourth-generation paddlers, making this 52nd Anniversary especially significant.
The State Championship Race in Maui is a notable and important milestone for youth paddlers, creating memories they will cherish for years to come. During their trip, youth paddlers will have the chance to connect with historically and culturally significant sites. Since the location of the State Championship Race changes each year, this opportunity presents itself only once every six years! The program relies on the generous support of our community, including parents, volunteers, donors, and sponsors. All proceeds from the 52nd Anniversary Lūʻau Fundraiser will enable our qualifying youth program paddlers to participate in the 2025 State Championships in Maui this year.
Paddling for youth goes beyond technical waʻa skills; it fosters leadership, discipline, ocean and water safety, and teamwork through traditional Hawaiian cultural practices. The 52nd Anniversary Lūʻau is the perfect family-friendly event to show your support for this practice, this program, and our community. Please join us!
